First Step Entrepreneur

This is just the audio from my YouTube videos.

I'm Art, I've been starting businesses for 25 years. Some worked, most didn't. Right now I'm building something called First Step Entrepreneur while making videos about it.

I don't have intro music or fancy editing. It's literally just the audio from YouTube because some people asked if they could listen instead of watch.

I talk about why smart people get stuck, share stories from businesses I've built and screwed up, and work through whatever I'm struggling with in real-time. Sometimes it's useful, sometimes it's just me figuring things out.

Each episode links back to the original YouTube video if you want to see it instead.

No step-by-step systems, no guru stuff. Just someone who's still in it, still making mistakes, still trying to figure it out.

This is a personal episode about health, self-awareness, and how sometimes what you think is a character flaw is actually something else entirely.
I was misdiagnosed for 12 years, and when I finally got the right diagnosis and treatment, it changed how I understood myself and my behavior patterns. This isn't medical advice - it's about the importance of questioning assumptions you've made about yourself.
What this episode explores:
How misdiagnosis affected my business and personal life
What I learned about the difference between character and chemistry
Why sometimes the solution isn't more willpower
Sometimes what you're struggling with isn't a failure of discipline or motivation - it's just information you don't have yet.

"Lack of motivation isn't the thing that's holding you back. It's not. And I want you to get that out of your head. You know that you're capable of being motivated."
This is a longer episode (17 minutes) that completely destroys the motivation myth that keeps entrepreneurs stuck.
The motivation proof you already have: Think about your job. If your boss called tonight and said, "I need you to give the presentation to the company tomorrow," would you do nothing? Of course not. You would find all the motivation, inspiration, effort and energy required to do a good job. So clearly, motivation isn't what's stopping you.
Why motivation-dependent entrepreneurs fail: Motivation is an emotion, and emotions are temporary. Building a business on motivation is like building a house on sand - it works when conditions are perfect, but crumbles the moment things get difficult.
The real problem: You blame your motivation when you should be fixing your system for converting motivation into action. Successful entrepreneurs learned early: you can't wait for the feeling before taking the action.
The solution - The Four Pillars of Motivation-Free Action:
Identity-based action - Instead of "I want to start a business," think "I am someone who takes action on business ideas"
Daily minimums - Something small enough to do on your worst days, significant enough that doing it every day for a year transforms your business
The emotional weather system - Treat motivation like weather - sometimes sunny, sometimes stormy, mostly unpredictable
Action-independent systems - Research shows motivation follows action more often than action follows motivation
Key framework from the episode:
High motivation days: Do your minimum, then capitalize on extra energy for bigger projects
Low motivation days: Just do your minimum - that's enough to maintain momentum
No motivation days: Still do your minimum - this is when the system proves its worth
The entrepreneurs who succeed aren't the most motivated - they're the most systematic. Your motivation will come and go, but your systems will build your business.

"At the time I'm recording this, I'm 45 years old. And if I could go back in time and talk to the 20-year-old version of me, this is what I'd say. I'd say I know you're an idiot. You are still an idiot, 25 years later."
If I could have a conversation with my 20-year-old self, it would be short - not because there isn't much to say, but because he wouldn't listen to most of it. At 20, I thought success came from following rules, working hard, and waiting for opportunities to find me. I was wrong about everything.
The three life-changing lessons from 25 years of entrepreneurship:
Lesson 1: Your biggest strengths will become your biggest weaknesses At 20, I was proud of my ability to analyze situations thoroughly. This helped me excel in school and early jobs. By 30, this same strength had become my greatest weakness - I was so good at finding potential problems that I talked myself out of risks that could have changed my life. Every strength taken too far becomes a liability.
Lesson 2: Most opportunities disguise themselves as work "The fun you have, the fact that you look at every idea as a possible new experience or as something that can be solved means you're going to be the type of person that takes risks, that sees opportunities when they come your way, or that is willing to invent new things. Inventing new things, trying new things, going against what everybody else is doing, is how you're going to make your name, your fortune, your future and find fulfillment in life."
Lesson 3: Keep having fun (this is the most important one) "So many people get into their 30s and their 40s and they don't have fun anymore. They know what fun used to be and try to rekindle that every now and then. But they stop having fun with just ideas and the people around them. They don't have fun at work. They're not creative thinkers anymore."
The brutal truth about following advice: The most expensive mistake I made wasn't choosing the wrong business model - it was following advice from people who had never actually built what I was trying to build. I spent years implementing strategies from business books written by consultants who had studied successful companies but never run one themselves.
What I wish someone had told me: Your biggest regrets won't be the risks you took that didn't work out - they'll be the opportunities you didn't pursue because you were waiting to feel ready. The perfect time to start was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.

Sometimes you have a realization about yourself that completely changes how you see everything you've been struggling with.
I finally admitted what was really holding me back, and it wasn't what I thought. It wasn't fear of failure, lack of confidence, or not knowing what to do. It was something more fundamental that I'd been avoiding looking at directly.
This episode is about that moment of honest self-examination:
What I discovered about my own resistance patterns
Why the thing holding you back might not be what you think
How self-awareness can be both liberating and uncomfortable
Sometimes the breakthrough isn't learning something new - it's admitting something you already knew but didn't want to face.

Nobody wants to hear that the thing they're insecure about is something others notice too. But avoiding feedback because it might hurt is exactly what keeps you stuck.
This episode is about building rejection tolerance - not because rejection doesn't hurt, but because the feedback you get from putting yourself out there is the only way to improve what you're building.
What we cover:
Why avoiding rejection guarantees you'll stay stuck
How to separate useful criticism from useless noise
The difference between feedback and personal attacks
Learning to handle rejection isn't about developing thick skin - it's about developing the ability to extract value from difficult conversations.

"I am both one of the most boring people you'll ever meet and maybe one of the more interesting people. I describe myself as either the most boring, interesting person or the most interesting boring person."
Here's something you may not hear often: being boring might be your biggest business advantage.
From the episode - Art's honest self-assessment: "By the typical measures - hobbies, travels, the things most people think make someone interesting - I'm kind of boring. I've had an incredibly interesting life, but I don't do very much. I live inside my head. The thing that gets me more excited than anything else is ideas."
Why "boring" people make better entrepreneurs:
You're reliable - Clients choose vendors they can count on over unpredictable personalities
You're thorough - While exciting entrepreneurs chase new opportunities, boring ones build sustainable systems
You understand normal customers - Most customers aren't looking for revolutionary excitement, they want solutions to everyday problems
Art's key insight: "What makes me boring is that I actually pursue the things that I'm interested in. Since my early 20s, I've always been starting something new. I've been chasing some sort of fame or success or wealth, or building something because my interest was peaked and I just couldn't help myself."
The personality myth that's keeping you stuck: The biggest lie about entrepreneurship is that it requires a specific personality type. This comes from entrepreneurs who get media attention - the dramatic ones with huge risks and larger-than-life personalities. But media attention and business success aren't the same thing.
The three boring superpowers:
Process orientation - You naturally think in systems
Reliability - You show up consistently
Deep focus - You can stick with things when others get bored
Your "boring" traits aren't liabilities to overcome - they're competitive advantages that flashy entrepreneurs spend years trying to develop. Stop trying to be exciting and start being excellent. The most successful entrepreneurs aren't the most interesting people - they're the most useful people.

I've probably taken more risks in my life than most people. Not because I'm naturally brave, but because I learned early that avoiding decisions is still making a decision - you're just choosing the status quo.
This episode breaks down what I've learned about decision-making from starting multiple businesses, changing careers, and taking financial risks that scared me.
Key insights:
Why most "big decisions" aren't as permanent as they feel
How to evaluate risk when you don't have all the information
Why the biggest risk is often not taking any risk at all
The goal isn't to become a risk-taker - it's to become better at making decisions when you can't predict outcomes.

This is a longer episode (24 minutes) where I talk about why I share so openly about business and entrepreneurship. It comes down to access.
Growing up, I didn't have access to the people, experiences, or knowledge that would have helped me understand how business really works. I had to figure everything out through trial and error, making expensive mistakes that could have been avoided.
What this episode covers:
Why access to knowledge and networks matters more than most people realize
How the internet has democratized access to information (but not wisdom)
Why I'm committed to sharing real stories instead of highlight reels
If you didn't grow up with entrepreneurial parents or business connections, this episode will resonate. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is share what you've learned with people who are where you used to be.

I almost quit everything. The YouTube channel, the business, all of it. Then I remembered something that changed my perspective completely: the 10% rule.
This episode is about those moments when you want to give up on everything you've been building. When the progress feels too slow, the results feel too small, and quitting feels like the only reasonable option.
The 10% rule that saved me:
What it means and how to apply it
Why most people quit right before things get easier
How to push through without burning out
Sometimes the difference between success and failure is just deciding to try 10% longer before you quit.

This is me being honest about something I've been thinking about: Am I optimistic or delusional? And how would I even know the difference?
I've always been someone who believes things will work out, that problems are solvable, that setbacks are temporary. But lately I've been wondering if there's a line between helpful optimism and harmful delusion.
What this episode explores:
How to tell the difference between optimism and delusion
Why self-awareness about your biases is crucial for entrepreneurs
When positive thinking becomes a liability instead of an asset
Maybe the fact that I'm questioning my optimism means it's not delusion. Or maybe that's exactly what someone delusional would think.
